NAVI students participate in competitions during the year and join our summer camp to strengthen their skills and prepare for the season.

Students can join up to 9 national debate tournaments, up to 8 regional debate tournaments, and multiple virtual & in-person tournaments. Including debate tournaments at Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford, TOC, and Lakeland.

Learn the Basics of Public Forum

Exact details will vary based on student experience, but this is designed for beginners.  Students will be provided with core materials.


All classes run from 6:30-7:30 ET on Tuesday.  The first and last day are 6:30-8:30 PM ET.


July 1 – Intro to Debate Topic and Contention Writing

  • Public Speaking: Gain confidence in presenting ideas clearly and effectively in front of an audience.
  • Argumentation: Build structured, persuasive arguments supported by evidence and examples.
  • Active Listening: Learn to focus on and respond thoughtfully to others’ arguments.
  • Flowing/note taking: Learn how to not only listen carefully but to flow and take careful notes in a debate.
  • Team Collaboration: Practice working with peers to strategize and present cohesive viewpoints.
  • Confidence Building: Overcome stage fright and develop a strong presence during presentations.
  • Compete: ES students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of local tournaments using topics familiar to them such as whether summer break should be extended.

  • Participate in local, national and international competitions:  Compete against students from around the world at tournaments such as Cal Berkeley, Georgetown, Harvard, IPPF, and the Global AI Debates

Founder of DebateUS and former Debate Coach for the Harvard Debate Council (2004-2015), Stefan was instrumental in the development of Public Forum debate in China and has supported programs in the Dominican Republic, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

Johnny Thompson is a second-year Harvard Law student and a graduate of Yale University. Actively coaching international written debate competitions. He has been coaching with our program for 3 years.

Jazmine Pickens is the Assistant Director of the Harvard Debate Council. She has been a coach at the HDC since 2019 after graduating from the University of Oklahoma and became the Assistant Director in January 2023.

Coach of NDT and CEDA elimination round teams, parliamentary debate champions, public forum and LD tournament winners and state champions, and successful public forum teams.
